Saturns icy moon, Mimas in an image taken on January 30, 2017 |
In the winter of 1985 I was driving through the Mojave Desert with a friend, talking about our apparent need for new river gear. As we passed the Twenty Nine Palms Marine Base, a man unexpectedly appeared on the side of the road selling used ammo cans. My friend and I laughed wildly and quickly came to realize that the moment was "All In A Days' Karma". This blog contains the occasional ramblings of a died-in-the-wool westerner who loves seeing, understanding, and being alive upon these landscapes. I cherish the moments of bliss and irony that come to all of us as we explore the planet and its residents (and perhaps visitors) in the short time we are here.

Cassini spacecraft prepares to release the Huygen's probe |
Incredible as it may sound, humans have landed on the moon of another planet. As we continue to expand the reach of humanity, one has to be amazed at such feats of engineering and science. I have attached two videos in links here and here that tell the story.

For those with more time to spare (one hour and eighteen minutes), here is a BBC documentary on the landing. Wow!

Crystal Serenity Set to Navigate the Northwest Passage with 1600 passengers

Map by Crystal Cruises |
I have sailed in the eastern portion of this routing, around Baffin Island, the Davis Strait and west Greenland. It is beautiful in a stark kind of way and one wonders if the luxury cruise ship crowd can endure three weeks of Arctic scenery? My guess is that there is not that much demand to see this through the years. Climate change is driving the ability for these ships to transit these waters.

Earthly-Musings Now Part of "Forming the Thread" Blog site
As a (now) long-time blogger, I usually have moments of fear and uncertainty, wondering if anyone out there is actually reading. A short while ago, I struck up a friendship with a reader who began to notice our similar life paths with wanderings we have shared in the Grand Canyon, Antarctica and Patagonia. The Earthly-Musings blog site brought me Joan Larsen, who felt a certain connection to my words and wanderings. And now, Earthly-Musings is featured on her site, "Forming the Thread" (Words form the thread upon which we string our experiences. – Aldous Huxley). You can read the first installment, a piece from my hike on the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island in 2013, here.

Nice Story on Georgie White Clark - Pioneer River Maven of the Grand Canyon
Whew! It's been awhile since I've had time to post here. I'm sorry to the one or two readers who ever look here. But "All-In-Days"karma" has not died - it was just taking a rest.
This post serves to remember Georgie White Clark, pioneer river maven of the Grand Canyon. My colleague, Joan L. shared a link from the year 2001 that recalls the renaming of a rapid in Grand Canyon after Georgie. But the article goes on to give a lot more background on the woman, an enigmatic soul who found solace among the rocks and rivers of the southwest. Read it here.

The Arrival of the Yankee Invasion in Cuba
Thanks to my sister Laura for this gem of a photo! Air Force 1 arriving in Havana Cuba on March 20, 2016. It's about time that the incredibly stupid policy of ignoring Cuba comes to an end. One wonders if this could be viewed as "Bay of Pigs Invasion II" carrying Yankee capitalism once again to the island. Remember, Fidel's Revolution was a reaction to the Bautista puppet regime of the 1950's. Cycles.
